Cutting crop losses – feature article by CPP project leader

Brigitte Nyambo spoke to Andrew Croft of African Farming of about various aspects of her work in Kenya. Dr Brigitte Nyambo, of the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecloogy (ICIPE), leads a DFID-funded CPP project for small-scale horticulture producers which helps farmers who want to sell to the EU to meet ever increasing export standards. “As well as looking at the export market we are also talking about improving the quality of the vegetables and fruit that are sold on the local market.” Cutting crop losses can be viewed as a pdf (217 KB) and click R8297 to read about this project.

 
What's New for March 2005
Second lesson learning study from the CPP - now available

Packaging appropriate seeds and fertilisers in small, affordable quantities so they can be accessed by small-scale farmers in Kenya is one of the aims of the Farm Inputs Promotions (FIPS) project. To find out about the lessons learnt from this project, visit our Communications page where you can view the second of CPP’s lesson learning studies carried out earlier this year.

Coming soon …. Opportunities and constraints for future economic development of sustainable vegetable seed businesses in Eastern and Southern Africa. A CPP scoping study commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation, the UK Department for International Development Crop Protection Programme, and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.

CPP vegetable cluster report – just out

CPPs innovative approach to research and development in the horticulture sector in Kenya was reviewed late in 2004. Additional considerations were given to the future of donor supported research in this area. The report from this study is now available and can be reviewed through a link on our Communications page.

 New Communications Initiative

We need your help to create awareness of the benefits of natural resources research and development. As part of our project management service, NR International’s communications team works with project teams (past and present) to jointly promote the approaches and outcomes of the work. As someone currently or previously commissioned by the DFID Crop Protection Programme, managed by NR International, you know how important it is to promote the work that you do to create awareness of it.

We want to capture the imagination of a non-technical audience in order to, ultimately, raise awareness of the work we, and you, are involved in with poverty alleviation through natural resources management. What we have learnt from our research programme communications initiatives to date, is that it is important to promote natural resources work in less traditional formats, to have wider-reaching impact and to target different audiences. On-Farm IPM of Chickpea in NepalThese concise and easy to read bulletins (Information Bulletins No. 64– 66) cover three stages in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of Chickpea in Nepal Project which is a sustainable development model implemented by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the Natural Resources Institute (NRI) in collaboration with the Nepal Agricultural Research Council.
